The Big Picture

The Georgia Zoological Society (GZS) is a private 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to advancing wildlife conservation through education and meaningful experiences with animals and natural habitats. Our aim is to make these meaningful encounters accessible to everyone, especially those in underserved communities who may not otherwise have the opportunity.

GZS pursues its mission through:

We provide educational and engaging experiences that enrich children's academic journeys and support lifelong learning for adults, especially for those who might not otherwise have access. We believe that learning about wildlife and conservation should be accessible to everyone, regardless of age or background.

Education

We actively support wildlife conservation efforts both in our local community and across the globe through this important outreach and education initiative.

Conservation initiatives

We engage with local community programs aimed at raising awareness about conservation and fostering a connection between people and nature.

Community Outreach

Partnerships

By providing access to conservation education, we strive to develop the next generation of conservation leaders.

The Importance of Conservation

Wildlife across the globe is facing an escalating crisis, from habitat destruction and poaching to the illegal wildlife trade and population fragmentation, these threats are pushing countless species toward extinction at an alarming rate. Yet despite the urgency, many people remain unaware of the crisis or feel disconnected from the very animals and wild places most in need of protection.

At the Georgia Zoological Society, we believe that education is the catalyst for change. People won’t fight to save what they don’t understand—or what they’ve never had the chance to love. That’s why we’re committed to connecting communities with wildlife through education and immersive, meaningful experiences. In doing so, we’re building a foundation of awareness and empathy that inspires action and drives long-term conservation.

Here’s what’s at stake:

  • Giraffe populations have plummeted by nearly 40% since 1985, driven by habitat loss and poaching.

  • Rhinos remain critically endangered—over 500 were poached in South Africa alone last year.

  • Cheetahs are disappearing as their habitats shrink and their prey vanishes

  • Humpback whales, though making a comeback, still face deadly threats from ship strikes and fishing gear entanglements off Georgia’s coast.

But there’s hope:

  • The red-cockaded woodpecker is showing signs of recovery thanks to focused habitat restoration efforts.

  • American bison, once on the edge of extinction, now number over 500,000—though fewer than 30,000 live in true wild herds.

While human actions have pushed many species to the brink, it is also through human determination, education, and cooperation that real progress is being made. There is hope, but there is still so much work to be done.

At the Georgia Zoological Society, we are dedicated to conservation through our four guiding pillars: Education, Conservation, Community, and Leadership.

Together, we can empower the next generation to protect and preserve the natural world before it’s too late.
